AM Feed - April 28: Future Indictment for Rove?
Hot Topics
- Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald is said to be two to three weeks away from deciding whether or not to seek an indictment for Karl Rove on perjury charges in connection with the Valerie Plame leak case. Earlier this week Rove made his fifth appearance before a grand jury to testify about the case. The president’s top adviser initially failed to tell the grand jury about his conversation with Time reporter Matthew Cooper, later claiming that he forgot. [link]
- After an initial breakdown yesterday afternoon, the Republican leadership in the House of Representatives twisted enough arms to clear the way for a vote on the watered-down lobbying “reform” legislation. Even after all the wrangling, congressional leaders were forced to hold the voting open longer than usual to secure enough support for this weak bill. The bill is scheduled for a vote on Tuesday. - Ten states sued the Bush administration’s Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) over the body’s refusal to regulate carbon dioxide emissions from power plants. Similar suits have been filed in the past and are currently under appeal. New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer, who is the lead plaintiff in the case, said that the EPA’s failure to regulate carbon dioxide “continues a sad course of conduct on the part of the Bush administration and reflects a disregard for science, statute and wise policy.” [link]
Quote of the Day
“We’re losing our moral authority to lead this place.” – Rep. Christopher Shays (R-CT), about the weak lobbying reform bill.
Morning Snark
- Who would have guessed that one Bush administration aide would be indicted for perjury, another would be under consideration – and neither man is Ari Fleischer?
Comment
- Oh, I’m so looking forward to seeing Karl Rove frog-marched out of the White House. The Repugs are really starting to implode in on themselves now, aren’t they? Unfortunately, the Dems stand by, passive, vacillating, weak and uninspiring as usual – what a joke our political system is. The only time the Dems show any fight is when Ralph Nader announces he’s running for President – then they pounce on him with a fury that should be directed at combatting the parasitical, wealthy elites in the Repug party.
— John Apr 28, 12:36 # - Bush is going to have to start early on his List of Pardons for January 2009.
— Rosalie Stern Apr 28, 12:37 # - You got that right, Rosalie. At times, even for the jaded political news junkie like myself, I find myself shaking my head in utter amazement at the shameless criminality of these hypocritical Repug assholes. despite a barrage on PR deceit, propaganda and spin (read: lies), polls show people just aren’t buying this shit anymore. The Bushites have lost all credibility and once you lose that you never get it back.
— John Apr 28, 13:05 # - I’m looking forward to the indictment of Karl Rove. Will Bush accept his resignation?
— Rosalie Stern Apr 28, 13:18 # - Rosalie, I think Bush will accept his resignation – Rove’s already been shuffled away from his policy duties, at least officially, in response to tremendous public pressure. Our relentless pressure is grinding them down…
— John Apr 28, 13:27 # - Calling on all American Family Voices readers to sound off and air your grievances and righteous anger about the injustices committed in our name by these bums in Washington. Torture, secret, illegal domestic wiretaps, The Soviet-style Orwellian-named PATRIOT ACT, the rampage against immigrants, the pillaging of the environment, the illegal pre-emptive wars against countries that have never done anything to hurt us, the war on women, the hatred of science and reason. My God folks, this is like that book, Atlas Shrugged, except Ayn Rand was coming from the wrong side of the political spectrum. I call on every reader to keep your outrage stoked and re-double your political activism to oust this unelected junta that hates America and is out to destroy us. BUT, I urge everyone not to put your hopes in the Democratic party anymore – we’ve been betrayed by them for too long – we must begin the long, arduous process of breaking the stranglehold the two colluding parties have on our constipated political sytem. They’ve declared class warfare on us and I’m mad as hell about it and I’m not gonna take it antmore!
— John Apr 28, 13:48 # - John, you forgot about Bush’s criminally negligent response in dealing with Hurricane Katrina and 9-11. Racism is a huge factor in their thinking, not just class and culture wars.
— Tamika Apr 28, 14:05 # - I agree Tamika – sorry, in my long diatribe about the innumerable injustices perpetrated by this illegitimate government I forgot to include a couple of the real doozies. Hey, what’s your take on all this furor over Congresswoman McKinney bitch-slapping that racist cop? If she were white, I can assure you this would be a non-issue. Same-ole, same ole in AmerikkKa, I tell ya.
— John Apr 28, 14:31 # - I have to chime in John….I agree if that Congressperson had been white, male or female, he/she would have never been stopped because they would have recognized. Those police officers should know who all the Congress people are in DC. What black woman has bombed a government building?
— Jeannine Apr 28, 15:17 # - I think the McKinney affair could have been avoided if every congress person had to show credentials or wear a badge ; just like real people as they come and go. Remember we are at War.
— Rosalie Stern Apr 28, 16:57 # - Jeannine, McKinney is a real gem, a strong courageous, highly-educated woman whose undivided loyalty to her constituents and to all us underdogs is beyond question. She’s the real deal and that’s why she has enemies everywhere. That’s also why the lousy Democratic Party just stood by and let her get savaged by her well-funded opponent, Denise Majette, back in 2002. She got the Nader treatment from her own party. Fortunately, she has climbed back in the arena, the House of Reps. I like other Dem Reps too such as John Conyers, Dennis Kucinich, Babs Lee, Lynn Woolsey, Hilda Solis, Henry Waxman, and others, but ultimately all of these other progressives pledge their ultimate loyalty to the Democratic Party, rather than their constituents. Look at how the strongly anti-war Kucinich endorsed Kerry in 2004 even though Kerry was even more Hawkish on the Iraq War than the idiot-in-chief. McKinney is the only Dem you can trust when the smoke clears…
