This rubber-stamp Congress has stood by idly while the Bush administration has dragged our country into the war in Iraq, writing blanks checks to private companies with no-bid contracts who are raking in millions of dollars of profits. War is big business and these companies are making a killing in Iraq.
AM Feed - May 18: After 16 Months, House Ethics Committee Awakens
Hot Topics
The House ethics committee, which has long been inactive during this extended season of scandal, has finally decided to open investigations into Reps. Bob Ney (R-OH) and William Jefferson (D-LA), and former Rep. Randy “Duke” Cunningham. Cunningham has already pleaded guilty to accepting $2.4 million in bribes, and is currently in prison. The ethics committee, led by Rep. Doc Hastings (R-WA), has been inactive for 16 months, yet the Republican-controlled House declined to institute an independent ethics watchdog position as part of the latest “lobbying reform” bill. Gen. Michael Hayden, President Bush’s choice to fill the CIA director spot vacated by Porter Goss, will most likely face difficult questions during his appearance before the Senate Intelligence Committee today. Hayden was the head of the National Security Agency (NSA) at a time when the Bush administration instituted its controversial warrantless wiretapping program. Additionally, the CIA has been rocked by scandal lately, as former Executive Director “Dusty” Foggo has been a target of a federal investigation into his relationships with a contractor. Hayden has already drawn criticism from some Republicans, including Rep. Peter Hoekstra (R-MI), who said, “He’s the wrong person, the wrong place, at the wrong time.” [link]
The Republican-controlled House of Representatives has passed a budget for the upcoming year that extends a disturbing trend of eye-popping deficits. The House plan outlines deficits of $348 for next year – but the figure will likely be even higher than that, due to the fact that the plan includes only $50 billion for operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. The wars have been costing about twice that much annually. The measure passed 218-210, and no Democrats voted for it. [link]
Quote of the Day
“We’re doing a heck of a job.” – Karl Rove, discussing the Bush administration’s handling of the immigration issue.
Quote of the Day (Flashback)
“Brownie, you’re doing a heck of a job.” – President Bush, to former FEMA Director Michael Brown, in the wake of the Hurricane Katrina disaster.
I reckon the House Ethics Committee finally began investigation now that they might have something concrete for investigating a Democrat. Guess they were waiting For A Few Dollars More.

Good one, Teekleman! Has anyone seen the 9-11 video footage that the F.B.I. recently released? I haven’t, but I’ve heard that whatever hit the pentagon didn’t look like a 757, but rather like a missile. I consider myself a 9-11 skeptic rather than a 9-11 conspiracy theorist because while I see obvious holes in the official account of what went down on that fateful day, I don’t really have an opinion or an idea to posit as an alternative explanation. I mean WTC building #7 collapsed as well as the twin towers – the only thing is that it wasn’t hit by anything nor was it on fire. It just collapsed at free-fall speed. Peculiar. Then there’s the BBC account that 4 of the 19 hijackers are alive and well and this has been verified. Anybody have any thoughts on this matter?

I have seen that footage of the “plane” going into the Pentagon and it does NOT look like a plane. It is going in so fast it DOES look like a missile.

John,
I’ve read some really intresting theories on the holes in 9-11 and I like you are also a skeptic of what we have been told. There was a documentary called 911 in Plane Site -> http://www.911inplanesite.com/ which was done to investigate the website hunttheboeing (I think that was the name of it) and there are some truely unique questions that are brought up. Like the excess jet fuel in the plane that hit the Pentagon, there was no EPA report of contaminated land, at least none that I have seen.
— Brian May 18, 15:37 #
The “plane” not only made a hole about less than 1/4 of its width but missed these cars sitting nearby!
— Maggie May 18, 15:39 #
And while we’re discussing the 9/11 stories, I have also heard that the plane that crashed in Pennsylvania seemed to have more than one crash site. There is an individual that lives more than two miles away from the supposed crash site that found body parts and plane parts in the pond by his home.
That doesn’t sound like a plane that just went down, it sounds more like a plane that was shot down doesn’t it?

my husband was driving on i-95 that fateful day and heard and saw the huge low flying plane as it headed across the highway toward the pentagon. The fact the hole is smaller than the whole of plane if it was intact only supports that the wings collapsed on impact and were incinerated by the burning fuel – did you not see the huge fireball that followed the crash? My husband could see it. And if the plane didn’t hit the pentagon, where the heck did it go? People were calling on cell phones from the inside of the plane, telling loved ones that they’d been hijacked and knew they were going to crash, right up to the moment the phones went dead and the plane crashed.
— jen May 18, 19:56 #
And, Brian, what about the excess fuel; again, did you not see the fireball in the video and photos of the pentagon crash site? The fuel burned up! I don’t buy these conspiracy theories, I guess because my husband saw the plane headed right for the pentagon. People see a conspiracy behind every thing. Ridiculous.
— jen May 18, 21:44 #
Jen, please don’t be so dismissive of skepticism – these people in power lie about everything so we’d be fools to swallow the official accounts whole. And conspiracies do happen; we were led into a war based on lies by the neocons. There’s a conspiracy in the form of oil tycoons that are preventing America from addressing global warming. There’s a mountain of evidence indicating that the 2000 and 2004 Presidential elections were stolen. The list is endless. Anytime you have a cabal of individuals who work in secret to advance an agenda or subvert the will of the people you have a conspiracy. Intellectual courage is needed – if we are too afraid to size up the threat we face, we can never prevail.
— John May 19, 09:33 #
John, I’m not dismissive of skepticism – I am the ultimate skeptic and no one was more opposed to our attack on Iraq or on the election of the idiot king, or the crafting of the energy legislation by the oil companies, than I. But 9/11 was not a conspiracy by our government; it was an attack on our country by al-quaeda. I think it is ridiculous to think otherwise; there are photos of the planes hitting the towers and eyewitnesses who saw the plane on a trajectory to collide with the pentagon – traveling at a high rate of speed of over 200 mph. No way that was anything but a plane.
— jen May 19, 10:14 #
Ok Jen – I don’t disagree with you necessarily – I’m just trying to keep an open mind. Thanks for responding.
