The AM Feed will be taking a hiatus as we evaluate our goals, format, and content. If you have ideas or suggestions for us, please don’t hesitate to email us at afv@americanfamilyvoices.org.

This rubber-stamp Congress has stood by idly while the Bush administration has dragged our country into the war in Iraq, writing blanks checks to private companies with no-bid contracts who are raking in millions of dollars of profits. War is big business and these companies are making a killing in Iraq.

AM Feed - May 26: Lay and Skilling Found Guilty

Hot Topics

  • Former Enron executives Ken Lay and Jeffrey Skilling were convicted yesterday and held accountable for the massive fraud that led to the highest-profile corporate collapse in recent memory. Lay was found guilty of all six charges against him, while Skilling was found guilty on 19 of 28 charges. Each man potentially faces a prison sentence of well over 100 years. The complicated case against the two men took more than four years to put together (Enron collapsed in 2001), and Lay and Skilling spent over $70 million in their own defense. [link]
  • It looks like the deck chairs haven’t yet been fully re-arranged in the Bush White House: Now Treasury Secretary John Snow has informed the administration of his plans to step down from his position within the next few weeks. Snow has routinely acted as an administration yes-man in selling economic policies – so much so that his credibility on the topic has sometimes been damaged. Early reports indicate that President Bush could turn to yet another insider and personal friend – former Commerce Secretary Donald Evans – to fill the position. [link]
  • Is President Bush finally acknowledging the deep hole he’s dug for himself through years of irresponsible policy and political decisions? Yesterday Bush appeared at a press conference with British Prime Minister Tony Blair, and both men copped to “mistakes” and “missteps” in the Iraq War. Bush also said he made a mistake with his infamous “bring ‘em on” comment referring to insurgent attacks in July 2003. [link]

Quote of the Day

“I learned some lessons about expressing myself maybe in a little more sophisticated manner.” – President Bush, during yesterday’s press conference.

Morning Snark

  • And with any luck, maybe President Bush will actually get around to implementing those lessons about sophisticated expression any day now…

Comment

  1. Shots were fired just a moment ago in the garage at the Rayburn House Office Building on Capitol Hill in DC. No one knows what is going on yet.

  2. GW Bush hasn’t got one sophisticated bone in his empty head. He couldn’t repeat his stupid comment that he couldn’t think of any mistakes he’s made so someone told him what to say. He probably even tried to appear humble.
He has probably never had a humble moment in his whole spoiled, arrogant life. His mommy taught him everything she knows about humility… which obviously didn’t take up much of her time.

And I think people like Lay and Skilling should be introduced to REAL prison with the murderers and rapists. After all, what they did was rape the shareholders and all of those employees counting on the pensions they worked hard for. They aren’t any better than the rest of the people in prison, they just think they are.

    Amerikan royalty scum.

  3. Wow! Thanks Jen, for the heads-up. Got any theories, right off the bat? You know me and my love of a good conspiracy theory…

  7. Rosa Maria Pegueros’ latest piece at www.commondreams.org/views06/0524-23.htm is really poignant – a passionate and furious cry for justice and sanity in this demented slaughterhouse of a world. I think it is well worth your time (if you can spare any) to check out this piece.

  8. Capitol Hill shooting – no clarification on what’s going on. The building is under lockdown.

  9. Conspiracy theory is it was a false alarm created to divert attention from some slimy plan Bush has devised to line the pockets of the wealthy – he always announces such plots on Fridays because people aren’t paying attention due to the upcoming weekend. This will further occupy the media and keep them from focusing on anything else. That’s the best I can do for you John :)

  10. Thanks, Jen – you are right on the money on this, I think.

  11. Sophisticated never comes to mind when that lying weasal opens his mouth. He is Arrogantly stupid and stupidly arrogant.
Does anyone know the names of the 15 Senators who voted against Lyman for CIA director? I’d like to nominate them for a Profile in Courage award.
As for Lay and Skilling I hope they rot in Hell or whatever comes after prison. I hope they live a long and miserable life before they get to Hell.
    Rosalie Stern    May 26, 14:53    #
  12. Beautiful words, Rosalie!!!
I’ll find out who the Senators were that voted to reject the Benedict Arnold who is now our new CIA director and post them as soon as I know…
    John    May 26, 15:15    #
  13. I think I just made a Freudian slip on the name of the CIA director. He may be a lyung man ,but his name is Hayden. Sorry, Mr Lyingman.
    Rosalie Stern    May 26, 15:37    #
  14. Rosalie, apparently those 15 Senators haven’t been posted on the Senate’s website, www.senate.gov, yet and I did a google search, but all the entries refer only to the vote in the Senate Intelligence Committee which was 12 to 3 in favor of reporting out the consideration of Hayden to the full Senate a few days ago. I’ll keep you posted…

  16. Arlen Specter (R-PA) voted against Hayden; he deserves special kudos for that vote.
    jen    May 26, 20:06    #
  17. Spector has shown a lot of couage recently. He almost makes me believe in Democracy again.
    Rosalie Stern    May 26, 22:18    #
  18. To John if you’re still reading this blog – the conspiracy theory behind the faux shooting on Capitol Hill – the shooter was our own Elmer Fudd, Cheney.

And, yes, Rosalie, I agree about Specter. He surprises me time and again.
    jen    May 27, 08:56    #
  19. Oh my, I do like the “framing” of Cheney as Elmer Fudd, Jen. Very funny, indeed.
