- An investigation has been launched to look into the circumstances surrounding the apparent suicides by hanging of three prisoners suspected to be connected to Al Qaeda and the Taliban at the U.S. military detention facility in Guantanamo Bay. The suicides yet again raised questions about security procedures and treatment of prisoners at the base. President Bush has told interviewers recently that he would like to close the base at some point in the future. It appears that the prisoners concealed themselves before committing suicide, but the investigation is not yet complete, and questions remain about why guards did not find these prisoners sooner. - Over a thousand bloggers gathered in Las Vegas this weekend for the YearlyKos convention, an annual gathering of the community of writers and readers of progressive political blogs from around the country. The blog community is a large and growing force within the Democratic Party, and this year’s convention demonstrated just what an impact this group has had on the party. Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, Senator Barbara Boxer, DNC Chairman Howard Dean, Governors Tom Vilsack, and Mark Warner were among the list of political hotshots that addressed the crowd. [link]
