AM Feed - June 21: Safavian Found Guilty
Hot Topics
- David Safavian, formerly the top procurement official in the Bush administration, has been found guilty of lying about his relationship with corrupt influence peddler Jack Abramoff. Yesterday a jury convicted Safavian of four counts of lying and obstruction of justice. Safavian was a member of Abramoff’s staff before taking a position with the administration, and he accompanied Abramoff, Rep. Bob Ney (R-OH) and others on a now-infamous golf trip to Scotland in 2002. Safavian’s trial is by no means the end of the fallout from the Abramoff scandal, as others – including Ney – remain under scrutiny. [link]
- The Republican-controlled House of Representatives rejected a proposal yesterday that would have required the National Security Agency (NSA) to obtain warrants before reading emails and listening to phone calls of American citizens. The measure, proposed by Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA), was defeated by a largely party line vote. Schiff said that the proposal was designed to bring policy back into compliance with the Foreign Electronic Surveillance Act. The Bush administration has long rejected oversight of its controversial warrantless surveillance program. [link]
- In yet another sign of division among conservatives over the immigration issue, the House has called for public hearings on a bill passed by the Senate that would allow illegal immigrants the chance to gain citizenship. Right-wingers in the House have taken a hard-line stance against this, equating it with amnesty, even though President Bush has supported similar measures. Bush has used what little political capital he has left on the immigration issue, and the announcement of these hearings makes it unlikely that any action will be taken before the November elections. Quote of the Day
“I think – tide turning – see, as I remember, I was raised in the desert, but tides kind of, it’s easy to see a tide turn – did I say those words?” – President Bush, when asked if the tide was turning in Iraq
Morning Snark
- It looks as President Bush was caught answering that question during a mental low tide.
Comment
- Idiot!
— Jeannine Jun 21, 11:18 # - He lives in a mental state at low tide!
— jen Jun 21, 11:22 # - Hmmm. I didn’t know there were any deserts in Connecticut. Unless he’s talking about Mount Desert Island in Maine…
— Dave Jun 21, 11:34 # - Seems to me it’s more like the worm turns.
— Doyal Davis Jun 21, 12:04 # - Now you all know there is a desert on North Padre Island as well as something like a desert in southwest Texas. Given that , he is still an idiot. A lying idiot. Two more years?
— Rosalie Stern Jun 21, 14:41 # - The Dixie Chicks were so right———It is still amazing to me that this country actually elected this moron to a second term.
— Tommy Jun 21, 16:35 # - Not so amazing when you think about it. The same people elected him the first time. They probably are getting too much sun in Bush’s desert.
— Rosalie Stern Jun 22, 11:05 # - We did not elect the lying bastard. He was put in office by the coroporations that purchased the political system in this country.
And don’t expect the next election to be open and honest either. They know they can’t win unless they cheat and so they will.
We need someone to oversee the elections in this country just like they do in other third world countries with dictators at the controls.
Where are you Jimmy Carter?
