AM Feed - July 7: Bush in Desperate Need of Good News
Hot Topics
- President Bush heads to Chicago today in his latest political gambit to reverse his steady slide into unpopularity and end months of unrest at the White House. How’s he going to do it? With a press conference. In an unusual move, the administration has invited both the national press and local Chicago press to quiz President Bush on a host of issues. Obviously the White House PR team is hoping that the Chicago press – which hasn’t heard the administration’s cliched soundbytes as often as their national counterparts – will be more receptive to Bush’s message. Of course, another strategy would simply be to actually think up plans for dealing with these pressing issues. [link]
- It looks like another shady political power play orchestrated by former Rep. Tom DeLay (R-TX) has failed. DeLay, who has already been indicted in connection with the Texas redistricting scheme, stepped down from Congress last month amidst persistent rumors of his relationship with corrupt superlobbyst Jack Abramoff. DeLay was facing a difficult re-election, and he actually moved out of Texas in hopes that his name would be removed from the ballot. Yesterday, a federal judge ruled that DeLay’s name must stay on the ballot, which will make it much more difficult for the Republican Party to retain his congressional seat. This would be a serious abuse of the election system and a fraud on the voters, which the court will not condone,” wrote federal judge Sam Sparks. [link]
- President Bush’s nominee to oversee mine safety laws in this country hasn’t been able to win confirmation from the Senate – but he was hired as an adviser by the Labor Department anyway. This end-around for Richard Stickler means that, despite the fact that his nomination has been stagnant since last year, he can still work on mine safety issues. Stickler was a former mine safety official in Pennsylvania. Critics point out that in the past, he has not shown enough concern over mine safety issues. [link]
- It’s hardly new news anymore, but it’s still impossible to miss: Oil hit a record price of over $75 per barrel on Wednesday. [link]
Morning Snark
- Who would have thought that former Rep. Tom DeLay would ever be lobbying so fervently to get himself off the ballot? Is he thinking of hiring Jack Abramoff to help plead his case (i.e. spread some bribe money)?
Comment
- I don’t get it, how can Delay move outta Texas when he’s under indictment in Texas? Can anybody help me understand this enigma?
— John Jul 7, 11:46 # - http://blogs.chron.com/texaspolitics/archives/2006/04/out_of_state_wh.html – is the answer to that question. He has no restrictions on his movements when under indictment. Screwy, but true. And he just had to move to my state :(
— jen Jul 7, 11:52 # - Thanks for the answer, Jen. Sorry that the turd moved to your state…
— John Jul 7, 12:18 # - My opinion is for people to watch out for another “911” to happen so that president knucklehead can “rally” the country. Another “911” orchestrated by this administration.
— Jeannine Jul 7, 12:21 # - Jeannine, you could be right – I don’t think there’s anything that these terrorists in the government wouldn’t inflict on us.
— John Jul 7, 12:55 # - They did it once, why not again? It works.
— Rosalie Stern Jul 7, 14:07 # - Did anyone see the DVD called “Loose Change”? If you haven’t, it is a must see.
— Jeannine Jul 7, 15:17 # - I WILL SEND A FREE DVD of, “LOOSE CHANGE” + DR. STEVEN JONES, PHYSICS PROFESSOR AT BRIGHAM YOUNG U.. THE TRUTH AND PROOF ABOUT 9/11. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT EVERYONE SEE THEM. I WELCOME A LOGICAL REBUTAL FROM ANYONE. SO FAR I HAVE ONLY HAD SHOCK AND AWE. SO UNBELIEVEABLE YET SO TRUE YOU’LL FEEL AS STUPID AS I DID:
THERE IS NO WAY 110 STORIES COULD FALL IN I0 SECONDS OR LESS BECAUSE OF A FIRE AT THE TOP THAT WAS BURNING FOR LESS THAN AN HOUR. IT WAS AN INSIDE JOB.
— Janell Jul 7, 21:35 # - Janell and Jeannine, I’ve ordered Loose Change and it has arrived, but I haven’t seen it yet – I’ve heard a lot about Steven Jones, but I didn’t know he had a video out…
— John Jul 8, 09:33 # - A rebuttal of sorts but if you’ve been diligent at getting to the truth and researching other sources, you’ve probably read about how most structural engineers have described what happened and how the buildings collapsed at the speed they did. It has, partially, to do with the jet fuel and the heat generated by the inferno, as well as how the building was constructed. Buildings are built to withstand fire, but not fire from jet fuel and planes crashing. Do some research instead of focusing on conspiracy theories. I do not love this current government but also don’t think this was a government conspiracy. You know me and conspiracies.
— jen Jul 9, 08:32 # - Jen,
what about building 7 collapsing at a free-fall? It was neither hit by a plane nor on fire. Kinda bizarre, huh?
— John Jul 9, 09:18 # - John, I can’t explain the building 7 collapse but I just can’t buy into the conspiracy theories I’ve seen to explain the rest of the 9/11 events because they’re pretty hokey. I’m particulary troubled by the pentagon because my husband was on the highway that passes the pentagon and saw the plane coming in low on a trajectory for the building. He didn’t see the crash because of the topography but heard it and saw the billowing smoke after it passed over the highway. If it didn’t crash, where the heck did it go? Building 7 is an enigma, I agree.
— jen Jul 9, 21:49 # - Jen, you must see “Loose Change”, your mind will clearly be changed.
— Jeannine Jul 11, 13:44 # - John, PLEASE watch that DVD and tell me that SOMETHING caused the towers to collapse and it was not a jet. Building 7 fell just like a controlled demolition. No building ever fell like the 2 towers or building 7 did from fire. Hey Jen, are you aware that there was very little debris from the jet that hit the Pentagon? If you have ever seen a plane wreck, there is a TON of debris and bodies. “They” claim all the bodies just vanished. That has never happened before.
— Jeannine Jul 11, 13:53 # - I meant there was very little debris from the crash site in PA. Not the Pentagon. A little slip.
— Jeannine Jul 11, 13:55 # - I’ll watch the loose change video. I think there was a lot of debris from the plane that hit the pentagon and didn’t they recover some of the bodies? The solicitor general’s wife (Olson) was on that plane and I swear I remember that they recovered her body and the bodies of some children that were on a field trip on that flight. There was a horrific fire from the crash into the pentagon that burned for days so I can imagine a lot of personal effects were destroyed.
