AM Feed - July 12: Novak Points out Two Leak Sources
Hot Topics
- Robert Novak’s latest syndicated column, published today, offers a new twist in the Valerie Plame leak case. Novak reveals that he voluntarily disclosed his sources to Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald – and two of the men in question were Bill Harlow, a former CIA spokesman, and Karl Rove. Novak declined to publicly reveal his third and primary source in his column, although he identified all three in grand jury testimony. “Scooter” Libby, the former chief of staff to Vice President Cheney, has been indicted on obstruction and perjury charges linked to the Plame leak case. - A new report from the Washington Post states that the U.S. Army will end its contract with Halliburton, Vice President Cheney’s old company. Halliburton currently has a deal to supply logistical support to troops across the globe. The company has drawn fire for its no-bid contracts, and for reports that it has overcharged the Army for things like fuel and dining services. Halliburton was paid more than $7 billion by the Army last year alone. [link]
- Embattled Rep. John Doolittle (R-CA) is under scrutiny for money that his political action committee has paid to his wife Julie since 2003 – a total of $140,000. In a highly unusual arrangement, Doolittle’s wife earns a 15 percent fundraising commission on all money collected by the PAC. According to records, Doolittle’s PAC also spent tens of thousands of dollars at stores like Saks Fifth Avenue, Tiffany & Co. and a day spa at a Ritz-Carlton. [link]
Quote of the Day
“It is unclear how the United States will achieve its desired end-state in Iraq given the significant changes in the assumptions underlying the US strategy.” – Excerpt from a new report by the Government Accountability Office (GAO), that focuses on the Bush administration’s “National Strategy for Victory in Iraq.”
Morning Snark
- Does this latest GAO report mean that President Bush’s initial assumption that delivering a speech in front of a “Mission Accomplished” banner isn’t enough to do the trick in Iraq?
Comment
- With the situation quickly devolving into civil war, I would think it would be plain as the nose on his face to see his National Strategy for Victory In Iraq is unachieveable – to put it in bush speak, the United States and America have failed. DUH.
— jen Jul 12, 12:36 # - The whole Pentagon/Halliburton deal smells VERY fishy anyway. Remember that the CEO of Halliburton is a retired high ranking army guy and undoubtedly got to be the head honcho of Halliburton through Cheney’s influence. Now, reports repeatedly claim that the Pentagon is having serious budgetary problems because of the Iraq situation’s drain on their finances. Is it too paranoic to suspect that this new develpment is the result of a Pentagon internecine struggle or even perhaps a nice little under-the-table deal between the boys at the Pentagon and Halliburton? And do we have any reason to trust any of them – - least of all Dick Cheney ?
— Francis Scalzi Jul 12, 12:41 # - Every day there is further collapse of the Bush house of cards. The puppetmasters will have a hard time running another president before they die. Of course, thanks to this current administration, they will die very very rich.
History will show them to be the most corrupt and hateful presidency and ours to be the stupidist Amerikan generation of all time.
But these guys don’t care about that either. They don’t care how many babies have to die to make them rich. And their children will be the same.
Does anyone think the Bush twins are ashamed of their father? I doubt it. That would mean they would have to have some kind of conscience and I just don’t think that is part of the Bush family makeup.
— MO Jul 13, 08:41 # - Again, I’m confused – if the traitor Novak has revealed that Rove has undermined national security during wartime by revealing official secrets, how come nobody is strapping him in to old sparky to “ride the lightning”? Treason during wartime gets one the death penalty, right?
— John Jul 13, 10:09 # - Valerie Plame is suing the traitors!!!!!!!!! Cheney, Libby & Rove; she forgot to include Novak. Someone should take an excerpt of Bush saying he would fire anyone who leaked her name and keep replaying it over and over and over and over.
