AM Feed - July 14: Cheney, Rove and Libby Sued by Plame and Wilson
Hot Topics
- Valerie Plame and her husband, former ambassador Joseph Wilson, have filed a lawsuit against Vice President Cheney, Karl Rove and “Scooter” Libby. The suit accuses the three men of violating the constitutional rights of both Plame and her husband during the orchestrated campaign to discredit Wilson. Remember, Wilson had been critical of the Bush team’s claim that Iraq tried to buy uranium from Niger (a claim that, in fact, turned out to be false), and the Bush team responded by attempting to discredit both Wilson and his wife. Plame’s identity was revealed as an undercover CIA agent, leading to an ongoing investigation that has already produced an indictment for Libby. The suit refers to a “gross invasion of privacy,” and seeks unspecified compensation. [link]
- The latest AP-Ipsos poll looks like it spells even more trouble for conservatives: By a nearly 3-1 ratio, Americans hold a poor view of the Republican-controlled Congress. Just 27 percent approve of the way Congress is doing its job. And that’s not all – poll respondents also voiced a clear preference to have Democrats take control over Congress following the 2006 midterm elections. Democratic candidates for Congress were favored by a 51-40 percent margin. [link]
- What in the name of Warren Harding is going on out in California? Republican Reps. John Doolittle and Jerry Lewis have already drawn scrutiny for their “intriguing” associations, and now it’s been revealed that Rep. George Miller® engaged in some shady deals of his own. Miller borrowed $7.5 million from a major campaign contributor and business partner of his – in order to buy land from the same business. Miller then turned around and sold the land (some of it back to the business again). All told, Miller pocketed between $1.1 million and $6 million in land deals with this contributor, Lewis Operating Corp. [link]
Quote of the Day
“Some politicians in Washington wouldn’t dare vote against this bill because they’d be lambasted by the media and liberal interest groups. I will not go along with bad public policy in the name of political correctness.” – Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-NC), after voting against the renewal of the Voting Rights Act, a landmark piece of legislation that helped to effectively enfranchise millions of Americans.
Morning Snark
- Congratulations to Rep. McHenry for taking such a courageous and principled stand…against a bill that has ensured equal voting rights for all Americans regardless of race or ethnicity. Way to miss the boat on that whole “democracy” thing.
