AM Feed - July 14: Cheney, Rove and Libby Sued by Plame and Wilson
Hot Topics
- Valerie Plame and her husband, former ambassador Joseph Wilson, have filed a lawsuit against Vice President Cheney, Karl Rove and “Scooter” Libby. The suit accuses the three men of violating the constitutional rights of both Plame and her husband during the orchestrated campaign to discredit Wilson. Remember, Wilson had been critical of the Bush team’s claim that Iraq tried to buy uranium from Niger (a claim that, in fact, turned out to be false), and the Bush team responded by attempting to discredit both Wilson and his wife. Plame’s identity was revealed as an undercover CIA agent, leading to an ongoing investigation that has already produced an indictment for Libby. The suit refers to a “gross invasion of privacy,” and seeks unspecified compensation. [link]
- The latest AP-Ipsos poll looks like it spells even more trouble for conservatives: By a nearly 3-1 ratio, Americans hold a poor view of the Republican-controlled Congress. Just 27 percent approve of the way Congress is doing its job. And that’s not all – poll respondents also voiced a clear preference to have Democrats take control over Congress following the 2006 midterm elections. Democratic candidates for Congress were favored by a 51-40 percent margin. [link]
- What in the name of Warren Harding is going on out in California? Republican Reps. John Doolittle and Jerry Lewis have already drawn scrutiny for their “intriguing” associations, and now it’s been revealed that Rep. George Miller® engaged in some shady deals of his own. Miller borrowed $7.5 million from a major campaign contributor and business partner of his – in order to buy land from the same business. Miller then turned around and sold the land (some of it back to the business again). All told, Miller pocketed between $1.1 million and $6 million in land deals with this contributor, Lewis Operating Corp. [link]
Quote of the Day
“Some politicians in Washington wouldn’t dare vote against this bill because they’d be lambasted by the media and liberal interest groups. I will not go along with bad public policy in the name of political correctness.” – Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-NC), after voting against the renewal of the Voting Rights Act, a landmark piece of legislation that helped to effectively enfranchise millions of Americans.
Morning Snark
- Congratulations to Rep. McHenry for taking such a courageous and principled stand…against a bill that has ensured equal voting rights for all Americans regardless of race or ethnicity. Way to miss the boat on that whole “democracy” thing.
Comment
- Why are some republicans such creeps.
— Jeannine Jul 14, 11:35 # - They are too authoritarian for their own good. Maybe not their faults, maybe they were dropped on their collective head to much as a collective child.
— Mike Jul 14, 12:18 # - Collective is right on the money. (Love the pun/s) Let’s hope that more people see that resistance is no longer futile, and vote accordingly.
— Dianna Jul 14, 12:41 # - The collective head: from each according to his ability to each according to his greed.
— Doyal Jul 14, 13:23 # - I hope their reign of terror comes to an end soon. The world cannot take much more.
— Jeannine Jul 14, 13:31 # - I’m always looking for the positive, and so am very happy to see Valerie Plame is suing those despicable traitors; also happy to hear the latest poll showing people are finally waking up to the fact that they’ve elected scumbag republicans who, along with the royals, are destroying our country and, better still, they want to see democrats elected in their place.
— jen Jul 14, 19:00 # - The above news item mentioned shady deals conducted by California rep George Miller, but this is incorrect – it’s my repug rep, Gary Miller, who represents all things corporate that is implicated in the shady deal. This is in the 42nd district – my district is the one that had a vacancy back in 1998 because Jay Kim was under house arrest for corruption. So my district is hotbed of criminality and corruption and I’m sick of it…
