AM Feed – August 1: Frist Fails to Disclose His Role in Family Foundation
Hot Topics
- Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist has failed to list his ties to his family’s foundation on his Senate disclosure forms – a possible violation of Senate rules. Frist and all other senators are required to list all other positions held outside of Congress. The majority leader and his wife are the sole trustees of the family foundation, which had over $2 million in assets as of 2004. Interestingly, Frist listed the position on his Internal Revenue Service forms, but neglected to do so on his Senate paperwork. Frist is also currently still under investigation for his sale of HCA stock last year, when insiders were peddling it at a 52-week high. [link]
- A group of 14 Democratic members of Congress have signed a letter to President Bush urging for the withdrawal of troops from Iraq by the end of this year, and for an increased focus on diplomatic and reconstruction efforts in the region. Included in the signers is Rep. John Murtha (D-PA), who has led the call for withdrawing troops from Iraq. The letter to President Bush does not specify an exact number to be removed. In the interests of American national security, our troops, and our taxpayers, the open-ended commitment in Iraq that you have embraced cannot and should not be sustained,” the letter stated. [link]
