AM Feed - August 7: Ney annouces, he's Throwing in the Towel
Hot Topics
- This is the first week of August recess, and all across the country members of Congress are back in their districts campaigning for re-election, but not Bob Ney. Rep. Bob Ney (R-OH) announced today that he will not be running for re-election this year after months of adamantly denying his involvement in the House Lobbying Scandal as he and several members of his staff have been under investigation. The Congressman claimed that he decided not to run in order to spare his family from “this ordeal.” Ney’s former Cheif of Staff Neil Volz has already pleaded guilty to involvement in the Jack Abramoff lobbying scandal. - As rockets continued to launch over the border between Israel and Lebanon, Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice met with President Bush at the president’s Crawford, Texas ranch, known as the “Western White House,” this weekend. Their talks reportedly focused on the crisis in the Middle East, and this morning President Bush and Secretary Rice held a press conference to announce their support for a resolution before the United Nations Security council for a temporary cease fire between Israel and Hezbollah. Morning Snark
- Sounds to us like Ney realizes that if he continues to put his family through “this ordeal,” then he won’t have anyone left to visit him in the big house.

- I think the Infamous Contract with America has turned to Contract With the Big House. It couldn’t happen to a nicer bunch.
— Rosalie Stern Aug 7, 13:48 # - The Contract with America was always the Contract on Americans, anyway.
— michaelj Aug 7, 13:59 # - I am truly saddened by Ney’s decision to not run this year. I was hoping that the Democrats would have him to run against.
— Neil S. Hutchens Aug 7, 13:59 # - Ney is probably spending all of his spare time trying to hide the money he stole.
— MO Aug 7, 14:38 # - The majority of Republicans in Congress (and in the White House) regard corporate lobbyists as their constituency, and they do not represent the people in their districts. Campaign contributions speak louder than every-day working people. Voters have a lot of house cleaning to do before our democracy gets back to good health.
— charles wurster Aug 7, 15:52 # - Ney is just another sleazebag in the mold of Newt Gingrich, Tom DeLay and Randy “Duke” Cunningham. Since the Republicans took control of the legislature, there’s been one scandal after the other, and they never seem to stop. Just when you think it couldn’t get any worse, it always does. Corruption in Congress is at an all-time high with the possible exception of the “Guilded Age” when self-serving Republicans were doing the same things that they’re doing today. Their “values” are not the values of decent Americans, and they don’t deserve to represent us in the legislature.
