AM Feed - August 10: Gas Prices Rising, Looks like BP Doesn't Mind
Hot Topics
- As gas prices continue to skyrocket in the wake of the British Petroleum pipeline shutdown in Alaska, we learn that this scandal could have been prevented. BP was told in February 2004 of the massive corrosion of its Prudhoe Bay pipeline, the largest oilfield in the country which produces 8 percent of the U.S. output, and yet still failed to act. Amid gas prices taking its toll on working families and congressional investigation into price gouging by Big Oil CEOs, this revelation helps remind Americans of the need for a real, clean energy plan with alternative fuels, rather than the continued drilling in Alaska and reliance on oil that the Bush Administration has been pushing. - The culture of corruption in the Gulf Coast region continues nearly a year after Hurricane Katrina struck. Yesterday, FEMA announced that the four major construction firms which received no-bid contracts to house Katrina evacuees will earn nearly $250 million apiece to do similar work in the future. Bechtel, CH2M Hill, Fluor and Shaw Group Inc., all major donors to Republican candidates and political action committees (PACs), will continue to receive taxpayers’ money despite outside investigators’ warnings of waste, fraud and abuse in using no-bid criteria to select firms responsible with helping to rebuild victims’ lives. Despite interim FEMA Director David Paulison’s assurances that the new process would be independent and fair to ensure the best use of taxpayer dollars, Republican back-scratching wins out once again on the Gulf Coast, at the expense of Katrina victims and American taxpayers. - In the aftermath of Ned Lamont’s victory in the 2006 Connecticut Democratic Senate primary race, national Democratic leaders have lined up in a show of unity to pledge their support of Lamont’s candidacy. Prominent Senators like Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama each pledged $5,000 from their political action committees in support of Lamont, and other national Democratic leaders from Sen. Barbara Boxer to former President Bill Clinton to Rep. John Conyers have pledged to campaign for Lamont if asked. Meanwhile, Sen. Joe Lieberman vowed to continue alone in his campaign as an Independent for the Senate seat, despite calls from bloggers and many elected representatives on the Senator to drop out to avoid a distraction and the diversion of money and volunteers from the efforts of Democratic challengers in three tight House races in Connecticut. Lieberman has also asked for and received resignations from his entire campaign staff, including pollsters and consultants, in an effort to shake-up his campaign team. [link]
Quote of the Day
“It’s an unfortunate development, I think, from the standpoint of the Democratic Party, to see a man like Lieberman pushed aside because of his willingness to support an aggressive posture in terms of our national security strategy.” – Vice President Dick Cheney in response to news reports that Karl Rove called Lieberman and told him “The boss wants to help. Whatever we can do, we will do.”
Comment
- This should be passed on in a big way to the people of Ct so they can see that Joe is not a Democrat!!! Anyone who would take an endosement from someone who only has a 20% approval rating from the people is sick!!
— Bill Noble Aug 10, 15:08 # - Grrrrr. I wish the Democratic Party would come out loud and clear, over and over again, that despite GOP attempts to paint the party as meek and not aggressive enough to respond to security threats, the Democratic Party stands for a strong security posture as well as one that responds to threats in such a way as not to increase the threat, but rather to thwart it, UNLIKE THE GOP. All the GOP saber rattling and attempts to portray themselves as strong on security should be blasted time and time again, because they respond by aggressive action against the WRONG FOE!!@!!!!!!! i WANT TO SCREAM THAT OUT EVERYTIME I HEAR ACCUSATIONS LIKE THAT FROM CHENEY, AS QUOTED ABOVE. Attacking Iraq when it was Osama Bin Laden and his cronies we should have been after. Why can’t that message get out there?
— jen Aug 10, 15:14 # - I’m actually quite surprised that they didn’t use Diebold and their ilk to insure a LieberBush victory over Lamont (“Whatever we can do, we will do.”) Unless of course, the running as an Independent thing is all part of the Bush/Rove 2006 Mid-Term agenda…I don’t know, but I do know that I don’t trust any of those scumbags!
— ckaiserjr Aug 10, 15:21 # - So the price of oil goes up, Bush and Cheney profit. No bid contracts in New Orleans Cheney profits. People in Iraq die and Bush and Cheneyand Rumsfeld profit.
Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld continue to make more and more money from the misfortunes of others. Big hairy surprise, eh?
Oh yeah and Leiberdog thinks he’s a progressive Democrat.
haha ha hahaha haha haha ahhhhaaahhhhhhaaa
Almost fell outah me chair on that one.
— MO Aug 10, 15:41 # - Has Joe forgotten the kiss from Bush???
Have we forgotten that Hugo Chavez offered to guarantee us $50 bbl oil in September. Bush should have been kissing Chavez instead of Lieberman.
Now Lieberman has an election crisis and the country has an oil crisis, both thanks to the Bush.
— Doyal Aug 10, 15:53 # - Leibermann is worse than a snake in the grass. He had little or no name until Gore nominated him for VP candidate. I wish we could withhold from him all the money he got from DSCC funds. He is no Democrat if he accepts an endorsement from
Shooter Cheney. I think the Democrats did stand up for the right things, at least in Connecticut. Go Lamont.
— Rosalie Stern Aug 10, 18:03 # - Jen
I’m sorry but it’s quite evident that the Democrats will never reform and represent us.
It’s time to look at other parties.
— Chris Aug 11, 05:19 # - I second that, Chris…
— John Aug 11, 09:17 # - Be careful what you wish for Chris. Cut off an arm and it doesn’t regrow. Better to heel the broken arm.
— Rosalie Stern Aug 11, 20:30 # - Funny, the FBI says – right on their website – that there is no evidence that Osaama Bin Laden was involved in the attacks on 9-11.
Also Bush said that there was no evidence that Saddam Hussien was involved in the attacks on 9-11.
So after 5 years, has there been any evidence discovered regarding who really did the attacks on 9-11?
Oh, that won’t stop the warmakers from their dedication to killing, but I’m just saying…
