AM Feed - August 11: Terror Threat Triggers Return of Fear Tactics in Campaigns
Hot Topics
- Yesterday’s thwarted terrorist plot is considered a victory for the international intelligence community, and the Bush administration has not wasted any time in joining the celebration. National security has consistently been the administration’s best campaign issue, but in light of the war in Iraq and the crisis in the Middle East, the administration has been long waiting for a way to brandish their national security credentials before November. Using their infamous fear tactics and claiming credit for defending the American public against a deadly attack, GOP officials are making it clear that they intend to make the threat of terrorism central in their campaigns this fall. - President Bush’s numbers have fallen back down to 33 percent, matching is all time low, according to a new AP poll released today. These numbers were not the only disturbing news of the poll, however. The poll shows that the president has lost the support on every issue including his handling of the war in Iraq and terrorism which have previously been his strongest points, and his support is dwindling in traditionally republican areas like the south. This news should have GOP political advisors shaking in their cowboy boots as they look ahead to November, because in the last month there’s been a 19 percent jump in voters planning to vote for Democrats in November. 29 percent say that their vote in November will be a protest vote against Bush, up from 20 percent last month. - After the news the British Petroleum will need to close their pipeline to the nation’s largest oil field due to corrosion, and the suspicion that BP Executives may have ignored signs of corrosion in favor of cheaper maintenance procedure, Alaska Governor Frank Murkowski is planning to implement stronger regulations of pipelines in Alaska. The state economy relies heavily on oil profits and with the pipeline closed, and reports earlier this week indicate that the state will plunge into financial trouble in a matter of weeks. [link]
Morning Snark
So if Murkowski is willing to regulate control of oil pipelines, does this mean he’s willing to stop accepting campaign contributions from the big oil executives who have been making a fortune from the “turn a blind eye” policy he’s been using to date?

Now, more than ever, we need two seperate parties. We need a REAL choice.
The Repubs want there to be only one party. They don’t want the confrontation, they don’t want the debates. They want us to have pablum.
We are NOT a nation of moderates. Without debate and a variety of views we end up with what we have now, no representation at all.
Hilary and Lieberdog are the Dems the Republican party are going to stick us with so there is not really a choice.
We need more Paul Wellstones. We need people with a voice for us, not the corporations and the rich. We need the radicals and we need to be proud of liberalism !!!
