AM Feed - August 16: Will Cheney and Rove Testify in Plame Case?
Hot Topics
- A lawyer for Valerie Plame is pressing for both Vice President Dick Cheney and aide Karl Rove to testify in a case brought by both Plame and her husband. The irony? He’s using a legal precedent that allowed President Clinton to be sued while in office to do so. Plame and her husband Joseph Wilson have filed a civil suit accusing Cheney, Rove, indicted former aide Scooter Libby, and others of conspiring to publicly identify Plame as payback against Wilson for speaking out against the administration. - Members of the Bush administration have never been shy about promoting their “with us or against us” ethos – and disparaging anyone who doesn’t fall in line. Now it appears President Bush is frustrated by a lack of support not only in the United States, but in Iraq as well. During a private meeting this week, Bush expressed frustration over the lack of progress in Iraq, and for the lack of support shown by the Iraqi government and people. This is a departure from Bush’s public stance on the war effort, which continues to be more along the lines of, “Of course we’re winning, how dare you suggest otherwise?” [link]
- In a related story, 300 American troops who recently returned home from Iraq are now scheduled to head back – just one month later. The soldiers are all based in Alaska, and will be stationed in Baghdad, a hotbed of violence. Many of the soldiers in the brigade were still in Iraq when the extension was announced, but 300 of the unluckiest had already returned home. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld has ordered them to serve an additional four months in Iraq. [link]
Quote of the Day
“I can self-destruct in one sentence. Sometimes in one word.” – Sen. Conrad Burns (R-MT)
Morning Snark
- Of course, there’s one word that makes Burns self-destruct faster than any other: Abramoff.
