The AM Feed will be taking a hiatus as we evaluate our goals, format, and content. If you have ideas or suggestions for us, please don’t hesitate to email us at afv@americanfamilyvoices.org.

This rubber-stamp Congress has stood by idly while the Bush administration has dragged our country into the war in Iraq, writing blanks checks to private companies with no-bid contracts who are raking in millions of dollars of profits. War is big business and these companies are making a killing in Iraq.

AM Feed - August 23: Public Isn't Buying Bush's War Spin

Hot Topics

  • The Bush administration has been trying to sell the idea that the war in Iraq is part of the war on terror for well over three years now – but the latest New York Times/CBS News poll shows the American public isn’t buying it. According to the poll, 51 percent of Americans feel the two are separate, a distinct shift from three years ago. Of course, the Bush team went out of its way to fudge the connections between Iraq and al Qaeda, even as intelligence suggested otherwise. A majority of Americans, 53 percent, say going to war in Iraq was a mistake. The same poll placed Bush’s overall approval rating at a dismal 36 percent. [link]
  • At his most recent press conference, President Bush declared that US troops will not withdraw from Iraq as long as he’s the president. Yesterday, the Marine Corps signaled that it no longer has enough volunteers to fill jobs in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere, and will be forced to call up 2,500 reservists as part of a mandatory call-up program. The call-up terms could last between a year and 18 months. [link]
  • Alaska’s Republican Governor Frank Murkowski finished dead last in yesterday’s Republican primary, meaning that his bid for a second term in office is over. Murkowski earned just 19 percent of Alaska’s Republican votes. The victor, Sarah Palin, will challenge Democratic Nominee Tony Knowles, himself a former two-term governor. Murkowski’s administration was marked by nepotism (he appointed his daughter to the US Senate) and scandal (he purchased a state jet after both the state legislature and federal government denied his request for a plane). He was one of the most unpopular governors in state history. [link]

Quote of the Day

“Could I see your green card? And Hugo, says, ‘No.’ I said, ‘Oh gosh.’” – Sen. Conrad Burns (R-MT) telling a crowd in June about the “nice little Guatemalan man” who fixes up his house.

Morning Snark

  • Would it be too much to ask for Sen. Conrad Burns, Sen. George Allen, and Rep. Katherine Harris (R-FL) to stage a joint press conference?
