PETITION: President Obama, Don’t Accept a Deal that Cuts Social Security

This week, the White House released their proposal to get the deficit down, and it did a lot right. The proposal would raise taxes on top earners, extend unemployment benefits, and increase the debt limit for the next two years. But it would also change the formula for CPI, or the Consumer Price Index – a change that would be a serious cut for those receiving Social Security.

Changing the CPI has dire consequences for Social Security – and we can’t let that happen.

We can’t let the government cut benefits to those who most need it to cut our deficit. Cutting funding for Social Security benefits as the cost of living rises is the worst sacrifice to make in this deficit deal, and would leave thousands of seniors out in the cold after years of hard work.

As a nation, our first loyalty should be to ourselves and our families – and to make life better for the middle and working classes. Cutting Social Security benefits as the cost of living rises is the worst cut to make – and we can’t stand by and watch it happen. We can do better than this deal.

We, the undersigned, ask President Obama not to accept any deal or compromise that changes the CPI and cuts benefits for those receiving Social Security. As a nation, our first loyalty should be to ourselves and our families – and to make life better for the middle and working classes. Cutting Social Security benefits as the cost of living rises is the worst cut to make – and we can’t stand by and watch it happen. We can do better than this deal.
